And then there are days
I can befriend the void and her secrets…

“We can disagree and still love each other unless your disagreement is rooted in my oppression and denial of my humanity and right to exist”

Stuck in a scene? Do what the pros do: use brackets. Write what the story beat is:

[Our hero gets out of the fight through clever means]

Then just keep writing what happens after. Maintaining momentum is key to getting the most words on the page. Meanwhile solutions often present themselves later.

My daughter was up from 1:45am-3am looking at me like
a brown dog is sitting in the back seat of a car with the words what 's happening below it

WHEN DOOM TALKS BACK

To learn a TikTok algorithm
while your life is targeted for massacre and death surrounds you
So you can appeal to humanity
and citizens in a country
Whose leaders already made their bed in blood
We try to hold hands through the air waves

Then the air raids
Then the silence

A reminder that Spotify stole the entire concept of Spotify Wrapped from a young Black female college intern and did not pay her for it, credit her, nor did they offer her a permanent job. Smh. I’d be so goddamn pissed.

America makes genocide a side dish so easily
It sneaks right by the tragedy
That is their sickness.
How easily they forget
whose land this is
and who they stole to till it

We keep crying out
We don’t want it to be a secret
Because the corporate smile will slap a bow on it
and call it a season

TO MY ELDERS
You are worth more than your expectations
Your presence with me
watching the tapestry unfold before us as a family, unchained
Does more for our time than your convictions about how it used to be
Your wisdom is seeping out through your smile
The rest,
I could care less about

HOWS YOUR BOOK GOING?! HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED WRITING SOMETHING PEOPLE READ? Good luck in the trenches out there today. And remember, all you have to do is self publish a bestseller that becomes a movie and write the newspaper about it

I GOT MY NAILS DONE

And the rigid peak of my spirit
Wants to retreat
Head back into the storm where
I’m not allowed to do such things
Landslide into guilt on top of more guilt
Colliding with regret—
Stop this!
The world has yet to end
Because I took time to see myself
and call her deserving

[INSERT PIC OF THE MOON]

And all of a sudden
Life’s mystery has a rebuttal
An answer and a prayer
A riddle gobsmacked in the middle of the universe
I look at her and I find power somewhere in the corner of myself
Just as large, silent, and confident
Despite the history written on her skin
