I have visited Carlsbad Caverns 3 times specifically to watch the bats fly. First time I was too early and the bats hadn't arrived. Second time there was a drought and no insects. 3rd time...f**kin' 🍊💩. 900 miles from home and no bat flight.

Spending Valentine's Day in, but splurged on making a chocolate VD cake with blueberries & strawberries. It tastes better than it looks. I missed out on the artistic gene. I think my husband will eat it. 🙂

Finally got to test my cold-weather hiking clothes. Smartwool top, bottom w/heavy-weight fleece pants, Enlightened Equipment puffy, smartwool buff, Australian possum gloves with EE mitts, and Darn Tough socks. Rating: cozy.

Even survived snow angel.

Late March frost on Roan Mountain in Tennessee. It was a beautiful, sunny day for a hike up to picnic in the light snow.

I adopted the buzzard as my spirit animal on trail because each time I looked up, there was usu one or more circling. I came across these 5 waiting for me. I was not hiking very fast. The picture quality isn't great since my phone was nearly always in battery saver mode. These pics all come from PA.

Sometimes the Appalachian Trail is really smooth going and then you hit Pennsylvania. Southern Pennsylvania is ankle-twisting tough. But . . .

Sometimes the trail is hard to discern, and sometimes it takes you to strange places.

In 2023, I hiked about 850 miles of the Appalachian Trail, from VA to NH. For various reasons (death in family, sciatica, sudden onset dangerously high blood pressure), didn't finish, but am going to do a daily pic from that adventure just so I can have one good memory a day:
