For one week only, Saturday is the new Friday.

It feels like sloe gin season, so I present a sloe gin cocktail

Superb tribute to Marilynne Morgan, distinguished lawyer and public servant, mentor and loyal friend to many, devoted servant of Middle Temple. A special person. RIP

Today I used this gin. Quite floral (and a pretty bottle)

You’ll be ready for this week’s #FridayCocktail. Behold an Orange Gin Martini.
Gin, white vermouth, Cointreau, orange bitters
Ice cold, strict, citric and fruity

What’s the significance of it being a “migrant”? Wouldn’t accidental release of any sex offender be just as bad?

This week’s #FridayCocktail is a ginger gold rush.
Bourbon, ginger liqueur, lemon juice.
Some receipts call for syrup but I have eschewed it, relishing the spicy and the tart

Your (my) #FridayCocktail is a fruity highball. Calvados, peach liqueur, lemon juice, syrup, soda.

Essentially a health cordial, 3 of your 5-a-day*

Sorry to learn of the death of Sir James Nursaw, former Treasury Solicitor & Home Office Legal Adviser. He was TSol when I joined government in 1989 and was still quite strict with me (quite rightly) when I used to see him at Middle Temple not that long ago.

It means I’m now the only living ex-TSol

I did wonder about this. I used to be a member of the Honours Forfeiture Committee, which could & did recommend the withdrawal of honours (including knighthoods) on grounds of “bringing the honours system into disrepute”. Legislation wasn’t needed

I’ve gone for a Manhattan again for this week’s #FridayCocktail. Autumnal and profound (ok pseuds-corner me)

Ely Cathedral, October, dusk

Today’s #FridayCocktail is a ginger and lemongrass mojito (containing a syrup made with those 2 ingredients)

Well misprints and typos do happen. A former colleague of mine once made an announcement congratulating the Pubic Sector Lawyer of the Year

The case that was “too big for the government to lose”

Because the government famously never loses big cases, which is why government ministers never get cross with judges who rule against them

I have ventured a version of the Trump Cocktail (which of course he didn’t taste). It’s essentially a whisky sour [Glenlivet 12 y.o.] + marmalade and some pecan syrup.

I eschewed the marshmallow garnish affair as you see

I like to look out for cocktails in books I’m reading.
This one is El Diablo (or Diablo Rojo), which Gabriel in “The Predicament” drinks in Guatemala.
Tequila, crème de cassis, lime juice, ginger beer. Very successful

There is this (excellent) cheat’s ingredient. Plus gin, dashes of crème de mûre and framboise, lemon juice, soda
September 5, 2025 at 5:14 PM
Many cocktails (including some of my faves) are variants on a theme: a spirit, something fruity, citric, sweet, maybe fizz. This is one such - a fruity cobbler. Very fruity in fact

In the Fen Country. Late summer. Spot the cathedral in the last one

I’ve got someone else to make today’s #FridayCocktail. A Ginger Stone Fence from One Aldwych. “Known in the trade as a bracer, this is a punchy libation with a kick”. (Punch AND kick, I’ll be black & blue)
