Richard Nelson, the Scottish Conservative candidate in next week’s Holyrood by-election, has defended his membership of the Orange Order and Apprentice Boys of Derry — groups long accused of sectarianism — insisting he can represent all constituents. Mr Nelson, who is standing in the Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse by-election on 5 June, confirmed in a BBC interview that he is a member of both organisations.

The letter, which is now available online for other MSPs and parliamentary staff to add their names to, has already been signed by a number of former Scottish government ministers including Elena Whitham and Emma Roddick, the deputy leader of the Scottish National party, Keith Brown, and the leaders of the Scottish Lib Dems and the Scottish Greens, Alex Cole-Hamilton, Lorna Slater and Patrick Harvie. It has the support of MSPs from four of the five main parties at Holyrood, including the former Labour leadership contender Monica Lennon. Hannah Bardell, the former SNP MP who organised the letter working with the Good Law Project, said she expected more Holyrood politicians and staff to sign up now that the concerns had been made public. “I’ve spoken to many MSPs who feel huge concern about this decision. I hope this can move the debate forward and that the corporate body can rethink their decision just like other organisations have done,” she said.

We also need to confront what our referendum symbolised globally. Ireland’s vote became a blueprint for other ​countries.​​ In Australia, a postal survey replaced a referendum. They cited Ireland as their inspiration. In Taiwan, the popular vote on marriage equality failed - devastating for that community. On the other side, referendums to restrict LGBT+ rights have gained popularity globally. We didn’t simply find a novel path to marriage equality, we helped legitimise the idea that minority rights should be subject to popular vote. That’s not a legacy we should be proud of.

An interesting strategy if you're worried about losing out to Reform. I'd be interested to know what these specific concerns about immigration are, and how Anas Sarwar is addressing them. I'm sure Reform will be addressing them far more clearly in any case...
A senior Labour source said: “It would be foolish to deny Reform UK could overtake Scottish Labour in Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse and there is no doubt this is a possibility. “Unlike the SNP, Anas Sarwar is rightly listening to people’s concerns about immigration."

“We are not the enemies of the Catholic Church,” says Edward. “The enemies of Catholicism are to be found in an aggressively atheistic influence at Holyrood. They are hostile to authentic Protestantism too and I think the Orange Order and the Catholic Church and the Kirk should be acting in common cause to defend ourselves. “Of course we’ve got sincere theological differences, with the Catholic Church, right? But that’s the beauty of life in general. There’s a lot that unites us. To me, our common threat is secularism.” He expresses sympathy for “that wee woman who got lifted by the polis for saying her prayers outside a hospital”.

I knew he'd fold due to being completely spineless, but this bit in particular is so ridiculous. There's no way Anas Sarwar believes that the UK currently has no control over its borders. Really looking forward to Scottish Labour absolutely tanking in the Holyrood election next year

Asked if anyone in Downing Street was aware of the similarity between Starmer’s phrase and Powell’s, the spokesperson avoided the question and just said he rejected “the premise of any comparison”. When it was put to him that the two phrases were very, very similar, the spokesperson replied: “I can reject the comparison.”

I'm using duolingo to brush up on my Irish, and there have been loads of odd sentences so far, but it's really getting into the good stuff now. I feel like non Irish people learning this will come away with the impression that we frequently discuss leprechauns

This argument really doesn't make sense to me. How can she be claiming that she wasn't there to express her views, whilst also saying she was undertaking some kind of fight for freedom of speech?
A woman who was given a conditional discharge after being convicted of breaching a buffer zone outside an abortion clinic in Bournemouth has claimed she was “not there to express my views”. Livia Tossici-Bolt, an anti-abortion campaigner whose case has been cited by the US state department over “freedom of expression” concerns in the UK, told the BBC’s Today programme she was “really disappointed” with the conviction “because it’s nothing to do with protesting” and said she would “continue my fight for freedom of speech”.
