John Le Carre’s first novel, Call For The Dead (c 1960) features an East German Trade Delegation in Highgate that is, of course, a spying operation.

Many academics are reluctant to join a national strike bcs they have no faith in UCU to conduct it effectively. I suspect we would do much better negotiating at local level.

The value of my salary has dropped by around 30pc since I became an academic 12 years ago. Not great for me but catastrophic for younger, junior academics who really struggle on indefensibly low salaries + precarious freelance contracts
