Quelle surpise that the response to a dodgy automated surveilance system, is another dodgy automated surveillance system. Kafka would be impressed.
My fave* part of this whole saga is that even after YEARS of being on notice to stop lying and sort their shit out, the Department tells the Ombudsman they have an app for that. And when the Ombudsman asks to see the app they say 'actually, no we don't'. www.thesaturdaypaper.com.au/news/politic...

Exclusive: Government warned over ‘legal basis’ of welfare system
Despite being warned in 2018 that jobseekers were being exposed to unfair and excessive decisions, the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations ‘chose to continue with the status quo’.

Heart broken for every single person this happened to - after years of asking DEWR to check on the welfare of ppl they were cancelling, turns out these checks could have happened 💔
You'll simply never guess who's done something completely horrific to welfare recipients.

More than 1000 people wrongly had their Centrelink payment cancelled because the employment department and services australia didn't bother to follow the laws they helped write.
Today we have more evidence that when it comes to welfare recipients, the people who control our lives simply don't feel it's important to follow the law.

BUT: We learned something extremely important – THEY MUST NOT CUT YOU OFF if you have no money.

Thanks @squigglyrick.bsky.social for reporting.

Hurrah, my first post in the new place. The inimitable @squigglyrick.bsky.social takes a close look at the way that punitive rules have been applied incorrectly, if not unlawfully, in automated and other processes in employment services: www.thesaturdaypaper.com.au/news/law-cri... #adm-s #adm #SSL
Exclusive: Welfare payments cancelled unlawfully
An error in the interpretation of welfare legislation has led to the unlawful cancellation of payments, as the department fails to manage its own compliance system.
