The best metaphor for being a parent to late teens/young adults I've heard recently is that your job is to be the sides of the swimming pool. They can swim out to the middle of the pool whenever they want, but I'll always be there for them to hold on to for support if needed.

Remembering John Prescott with fondness today. My dad died when the MV Derbyshire sank in 1980, and JP was the first minister, 17 years later, to treat the bereaved families campaigning to find out what happened and why with any compassion at all.
