After passing through the focus group, here is the next exciting installment of my blog: Sunsets, spreadsheets, and languishing leaves.

Mostly pictures of the conferences I attended and presented at over the summer. Enjoy!

As I show in my new preprint, #Bayesian statistics is no longer just a niche tool. It’s becoming mainstream in linguistics research. A survey of journal articles shows a rapid rise in Bayesian regression over the past five years. Why?

How to delete your account without agreeing to the new TOS:

In the dialogue box asking you to agree, DO NOT click agree. Instead, click on the TOS link which will open another tab. In the top right of that tab you can go to your account settings and delete your account.

Honoured to have given a plenary lecture at the #SLE2025 conference in Bordeaux!
I dicussed how modal constructions of necessity and obligation in #SingaporeEnglish are affected by contact phenomena.

📺 If interested, watch the full plenary here:

Can a study rightfully state its “effect is found ACROSS LANGUAGES” when it’s only two (in this case English and another well-studied one)?

What’s the minimum? Serious question.

We don’t need AI to solve questions like these, just logical thinking and basic programming skills. Great article!

Going through @emilymbender.bsky.social and @alexhanna.bsky.social’s new book The AI con.

Despite the aggressive marketing here (big turnoff) I’m in chapter 3 and it might be the most timely book I read this year🫰Insightful throughout

Will formulate my thoughts after another AI writing workshop 😮‍💨😮‍💨

Day 6 of yeeting apps that suck up my attention off my phone (instagram, facebook, Reddit) and the withdrawal signs are lessening. My phone has become boring. Obviously bluesky could stay, as it hasn’t turned into an ever updating slot machine (yet).

On Friday we learned about our paper in English Language and Linguistics (next skeet)

Things I did not have on my May 2025 fortune telling bingo card: my mom excitedly telling me abt using ChatGPT for the 1st time in her life, and it's for tarot readings and astrology 🔮✨✨

So I also tried it. Good news everybody. Even 4.5 "does not have access to a good astrological API". We're safe.

One day you go to sleep wondering what all this stochastic "chance of P occurring", with P being the chance of an honest die, is all about.

And then one day you wake up 20 years later, eagerly looking forward to continuing watching videos about statistics on youtube.

What are the actual odds? 🤯🧮

Grellig…

I actually encountered the issue @dingemansemark.bsky.social mentioned about the bibliography being removed from the chapter in question. Super inconvenient OUP!

And totally unreasonable to not give authors offprints without their begging for it.

Turns out they don't trust authors with offprints anymore, citing "piracy" concerns, and would rather you didn't share your work at all where they can't track it

I'm loving the hypocrisy of telling authors they can't share PDFs of their work with anyone and then sharing ALL that work with OpenAI without the authors' permission.

Publishers need us more than we need them in this era...
