Lmao, same. I've done a full playthrough 50+x since 1997, and only realized this in one of my last playthroughs. I only discovered the ribbon at Gaea's cliff a few years ago. And in my very last one a few months ago I learned about swapping entire rows of materia. Literally never knew that.

Of course, this all leads to the Gold Chocobo; there needs to be at least one location which is only accessible using a Gold Chocobo. It doesn't necessarily need to gatekeep KOTR, but give us a location which may be viewable via the Highwind but is inaccessible without a Gold Chocobo. 3/3

It provides a reason and incentives for its addition as a requirement for exploration and discoverying new secrets. Maybe Junon now needs a Chocobo which can climb mountains AND has a water jet to navigate Lifestream pools. Maybe Cosmo Canyon needs climbing AND gliding to navigate. Etc. 2/3

Of course, there's Gilgamesh, but I'm confident he'll be a Weiss-like post game battle since it seems like he's set to return after Cloud finally defeats Sephiroth.
Then again, he tried to summon Excalibur (but failed), and there's a dozen different ways to interpret that.

Otherwise, there are potentially 3 from OG which seem a little out of place. If they kept the Bahamut summons as knights, Chocobo & Moogle, Hades, and Typhon/Typhoon would seem a little out of place as protectors of the planet and could be swapped out.

In OG there were the 3 Bahamuts (regular, Neon, Zero), KOTR, and 12 others (and the Master, of course). Maybe P3s KOTR would be the OG 12 + Arthur? While we gain the Bahamut summons in Remake and Rebirth, it's also canon we battle against them as endgame bosses and in Advent Children.

One could argue that summons were protectors of the planet alongside Weapons and the Cetra. While at this point more than 13 exist throughout the compilation and Remake trilogy, it would be an interesting take on KOTRs origin. The math isn't perfect by any means, but...
