This is a wild theory, but I'm wondering if the Gi's forging of the Black Materia resulted from trying to remove their despair and hopelessness in order to potentially be absorbed into the Lifestream - and perhaps got this idea from the Cetra themselves during their talks.

Like, let's take the multi-deck strategy from Witcher 3's Gwent, add in RNG booster packs, and have separate tournament quests - one for any/all cards and another for specific decks or card rules.
