Also between the people who loved the place + felt unsafe vs those who hated it + felt unsafe. I hated it, but my friends love it, and because of that we have completely different experiences. My friends dream of it being safe enough to go back. You couldn't pay me to go back, even if it was safe.

Controversial opinion. Writing off small town red areas was part of the problem in the first place. Lack of education, etc makes it easier to brainwash. I've seen it first hand growing up in a small town. The way to stop the cycle is to target the people brainwashing, not the brainwashed.

This reminds me of the time I had a religious childhood bully, so I learned different common phrases in Latin, like "the weather is nice," to mutter near only her and freak her out. It was petty, but it did get her stop. 😂

Thank you for this. When I saw the article, I immediately knew the mindset wasn't healthy, but it still kinda gets to you, you know? Especially when you are an adult still in your parents basement. Like I used to laugh at the memes, now I am them 😭 (not really but it feels like it)

In my experience this is usually not a good thing and a sign that something needs to change. I find it typically extends from avoidance of something or a need to be useful. I highly recommend therapy to anyone who thinks like this before you burn yourself out.
