The DAC was in decline after the turn of the century. Many members served in the Spanish-American war.

Bringing in a great trainer Mike Murphy is credited for the great success of the club in track and field. Meanwhile, the DAC baseball team brought home an increasing number of local and regional trophies and became the "amateur champion of the world" in 1893.

In winter 1888 the American Athletic Union was formed and DAC was a charter member, hosting the first international athletic meet later that year in Sep 1888.

Started in 1882 as the Amateur Athletic Association by baseball enthusiasts, renting the original DAC grounds from Penisular Cricket Club. This association grew and culminated in the incorporation of the Detroit Athletic Club in Sep 1887 and the building of the clubhouse in 1888

With soccer gaining steam within the state, the idea to form a Michigan College Soccer League is proposed by the Normal School of PhysEd (Battle Creek College). Candidates included Univ of Michigan, Ypsilanti Normal (Eastern Michigan) & Olivet College.
