"Please," he said softly, "come out tomorrow. For me?" Guilt welled in Siobhan's chest as she met his eyes, their corners creased with the effort of holding back tears. The weight of their situation suddenly descended on her, suffocating and shameful. Had she really let months pass like this? When had "giving her time" turned into "avoiding the problem"? To me, it’s a deeply romantic, thoughtful, calming color. Also, I kept gravitating towards putting Gale in deep blues and purples, and it happens those colors look great on Siobhan too.

Rolan snapped awake before finishing his thought, wheeling in his chair; somewhere in the stacks behind him, something metallic skittered across the hardwood floor. The sound sent chills up his neck to the tips of his ears. "Who-who's there?!" he shouted, trying and failing to deepen his voice. He braced himself against the chair's wooden arm to stand and cupped a lightning spell in the claw his other hand. Sparks danced between his fingers, illuminating the shadows in blue flashes. For a long while, there was nothing. Rolan's heart began to slow. A hallucination. A lack of sleep. Then, suddenly, the lightning in his hand flashed off the domed surface of something – a creature – darting between the bookshelves. "Show yourself!" Rolan demanded, the spell flaring to life again as he flung up his hand. Rolan gripped the base of Gale’s newly conjured tail and waited a beat to gauge his reaction. Rolan’s lip curled with self-satisfaction; as the pads of the tiefling’s fingers found a familiar, thin-skinned nerve—one of his own favorite sensitive spots—Gale let out a surprised grunt and beat a fist on the desk before steadying himself. The tail’s girth flickered in Rolan’s hand momentarily. “Concentrate, Gale,” he chided. “This is a novice test.” “Y-yes, sir,” Gale affirmed, gritting his teeth.

For a long while, she was silent, listening to the distant sounds of the farmers’ market coming to life. Despite the chilly spring air, she basked in the growing warmth of the sun, which twinkled off the last sheets of ice at their feet. And then she saw it: shoots of green and white pushing up through the snow. All around them, the first flowers of the season defied the slurry of frozen mud. Alfira pointed out the clusters of delicate, bell-shaped buds. “Do you know what those are?” “Mmm, ‘fraid not,” Lakrissa murmured. “They’re called snowdrops,” Alfira said with a hint of reverence in her voice. “They’re the first flowers to bloom in spring, when it’s still cold and icy.
