It’s all about the ALT text here. Go on. It’s worth making the effort.
He/him. They/them is fine. Silas is my own preference.

Listened to this final episode three times. Twice in and out of sleep last night then again this morning. A remarkable piece of, shall we call it entertainment? Clever and frightening and intriguing and absolutely worth listening to again. Bravo gents.
Broken Veil.

There will always be good in the world.
Mary Burchell remains one of the most successful romance writers, ever. Over 110 Mills and Boon books to her name.

Less well known is that much of her early writing was done for one purpose:

Funding her efforts to get Jews out of Nazi Germany, with her sister.

Mary is a Righteous Gentile. /1 🧵

Love this idea. Important this stuff is out there and people know.
Exhibition to highlight Bristolians who profited from slavery
The exhibition aims to “correct the historical narrative by installing plaques at sites linked to the enslavement of African people”

23 years ago I wrote a story for the Guardian about a stowaway who had fallen from a plane and landed in a car park in Richmond, w London. Then, earlier this year, I received an email from his younger brother. This is their story

‘He wanted a better life’: the man who fell from a plane in search of a new start – and the brother who retraced his journey 20 years later
In 2001, a badly broken body was found in a London car park. Police said the man had tried to enter the UK by hiding in a plane’s landing gear. Two decades after the Guardian first told his tragic sto...

a friend shared this essay on the decontextualization of communist and anti-fascist monuments for the sake of clickbait, and I think it’s incredibly important. if you’ve ever shared images of the various Spomeniks in Yugoslavia, this is a must read:

Concrete clickbait: next time you share a spomenik photo, think about what it means
Photos of Yugoslav monuments known as spomeniks are often shared online, exoticised and wrenched from context. But now, argues Owen Hatherley, it is…

I have resisted being a dick about this here but alt text is so important. Me, I don’t really need it though my eyesight is slowly getting worse. Handwriting mind, knowing how awful mine is, I wouldn’t subject anyone to.

Just rearranged the apps on my screen to put twatter further away and bsky closer to home. Already feeling better. Hi Alex! Love paper cuts btw.
I’ve been here and more or less off Twitter (I log in twice a week to retweet my podcast links, then log out again) since late last year. I think it’s genuinely improved my mood and mental health. The thought of going back to Twitter now is roughly as tempting as sticking my hand in the toaster.
Having been off the hellsite for a few days, it’s already made a big difference to my underlying wellbeing to not have a direct window into abject doom & the very worst of humanity, just when I want to check in on what’s happening.
