it's not a choice, at the end, when they already decided long ago that there's only one answer that isn't cartoonishly evil. maelle is the main character of the game, and they never let you be her. it's her story, but she isn't allowed a respectful ending. which clouds the whole thing retroactively!

the one reliable piece of real verso we have, the faded boy, says the beings in the canvas are real people with real souls. why is everything in act 3 totally skippable content. why does maelle get told to put away childish girlish fantasy. why is renoir's grief the only valid grief.

for a story that takes great pains to explain that there is life worth living after loss, that art is a powerful healing tool, that suicide isn't the answer, they sure do bin all of that right at the finish line.

this is exactly what my friends and I have been yelling about wrt this game. this was my first jrpg style game and I was amazed at how much I thoroughly loved it...... up until the final moment, where it does this to you. I am constantly amazed at people praising the ending specifically.
