This is good, and I hope it spreads exponentially. No borrowed holding facilities, no hotels to stay in (keep it up Pasadena), no restaurants in which to eat. There is no need to make unconstitutional kidnappers welcome in OUR state.

BREAKING: In a vote of 102-54, the Georgia State House voted to pass HB 267, an anti-trans bill to ban transgender participation in sports, to ban trans youth from using restrooms that align with their gender, and to redefine sex solely based on reproductive capacity.

We are extremely disappointed by the House’s passage of HB 267 today, an expansive anti-transgender bill which has been misleadingly called only a transgender sports ban. HB 267 would not only ban transgender participation in sports of all ages, but it also would ban transgender youth from using bathrooms which align with their gender, in addition to narrowly redefining sex based solely on one’s sex at birth and reproductive capacity across 45 sections of Georgia law. This especially could have far-reaching consequences for all women and girls. We know what a hard day this is, especially for members of the transgender community. Transgender people have always and will always exist. No piece of legislation can erase that. We are proud of how hard people have fought this bill over the last several weeks. We also appreciate the heartfelt testimony of House Democrats who spoke against this harmful bill: Leader Carolyn Hugley, Rep. Park Cannon, Rep. Karla Drenner, Rep. Imani Barnes, Rep. Karen Lupton, Rep. Jasmine Clark, and Rep. Anne Allen Westbrook. It was meaningful to have so many women leaders stand and denounce passing this discriminatory bill under the guise of ‘protecting women.’ We understand that bathroom and sports restrictions are an invitation for abuse and harassment, and it makes people less safe altogether. Government does not belong in our children’s restrooms. The bill will now head to the Senate for consideration, but the fight is not over. We remain committed to fighting all anti-LGBTQ and anti-transgender legislation in the Georgia General Assembly.

Georgia lawmakers continue their assault on academic freedom, now threatening to deny loans, grants, and scholarships for “disruptive” student protestors, vaguely defined.

HB 602 revokes state financial aid, including scholarships such as Hope and Zell Miller, for two years from student protestors on Georgia college and university campuses who are convicted or found to have violated a student code of conduct due to "materially and substantially disruptive conduct." The definition of "materially and substantially disruptive conduct" encompasses a wide range of activity commonly associated with campus activism and protests. Main Concerns: This bill imposes harsh financial penalties for students who engage in a wide range of protest and civil disobedience activities which result in even minor student code of conduct violations. This bill would broadly impact students who are disciplined for engaging in campus activism, including protesting on campus, graffiti, and participating in student encampments. For example, students who protest outside of campus events using "loud or sustained noise" intended to discourage attendees or who block campus sidewalks could be penalized under this bill. This is a further attempt to suppress campus activism by creating higher penalties for students who speak out. Given universities' willingness to call law enforcement in response to campus organizing, this bill poses a threat to student safety. Following the harsh crackdown on support for Palestine in colleges and universities in Georgia and across the country, this bill will likely be used to further repress organizing in support of Palestine. Despite boilerplate language in the bill aiming to protect First Amendment rights, this bill will nonetheless curtail those rights by repressing student speech.
