The first nerve net connectome is here, and it belongs to a comb jelly. This ancient lineage could crack open research into the evolution of sensory motor coordination, researchers say.

Fruit fly sleep looks different, but new research finds that Drosophila brain responses to sensory patterns resemble those in vertebrates. This could help us understand how sleep evolved in the first place.

Drosophila, like vertebrates, filter sensory information during sleep
Predictive sensory processing in sleeping Drosophila echoes vertebrate research, establishing an evolutionarily conserved neural signature of sleep.

My latest on a mysterious disease that's been obliterating sea star population for over a decade. Now scientists have found refuge population in the fjords of British Columbia and it might help them figure out what was causing the disease in the first place.

Like everything else people's pensions are at risk from climate change. Fund managers can protect their beneficiaries by taking it seriously. But many aren't. My report for @sierramagazine.bsky.social

Climate Change Imperils Pensions. Here’s How Some Investment Managers Protect Them.
A new report shows that the majority of managers still need to step up

Laura Helmuth's impact on Scientific American & science journalism is immeasurable. She demonstrated how a major legacy publication could be a moral one: rigorous reporting on the climate crisis & untangling how science is political, such as explaining why trans kids deserve gender-affirming care
I’ve decided to leave Scientific American after an exciting 4.5 years as editor in chief. I’m going to take some time to think about what comes next (and go birdwatching), but for now I’d like to share a very small sample of the work I’ve been so proud to support (thread)

“There's no outrunning climate change,” Roser says. “It's a global phenomenon. And, you know, I guess it was our turn.”
I talked to NPR about the idea of climate havens. “It's really both a privilege and a fantasy to think that we can escape to someplace that's perfectly insulated from the climate crisis."

But I do empathize with the appeal, especially today as we watch Milton bear down on family in Sarasota.
They came to Asheville looking for a 'climate haven.' Then came Hurricane Helene
When Mary Ann Roser and her husband moved to Asheville four months ago they introduced themselves to neighbors as “climate refugees from Austin.” After Helene, she has thoughts on “climate havens."

Found something really cool in my data today. This will probably be the last thing I do in my PhD.
As excited as I am to venture out into science writing world once I finish my PhD, I will definitely miss this feeling🧪
