Hannah Mary Goodlad, the SNP candidate for Shetland in the Scottish parliament election in May, has said she is prepared to go against party proposals when Shetland’s interests are at stake. This came as Ms Goodlad condemned the obligation for pelagic fishermen to land more quota at Scottish ports.

A regional bus fare pilot scheme, capping fares at £2, will be rolled out in Shetland and in Orkney, along with the Western Isles, the Highlands, Moray and Argyll and Bute.

The Scottish government is to increase its economic-link landing-target for pelagic fish from 55 per cent to 70 per cent of catches which must be landed for Scottish fish processing factories.

This year, nearly 326 thousand boxes were landed at the white fish markets of Lerwick and Scalloway. This year has been the tenth highest white fish landings year of the 23 years of the electronic market, the record year being 2019 with 436 thousand boxes.

The UK government has confirmed that the United Kingdom will rejoin the Erasmus scheme for students from 2027. The previous Erasmus+ was highly valued in Shetland, including Shetland College students visiting Vos in Norway annually up until 2020, when that final visit was cut short due to covid.

United Kingdom, Faroe, Iceland and Norway have reached agreement on measures to manage North-East Atlantic mackerel stocks next year. This limits fishing by the four coastal states to 107.5 per cent of the total allowable catch for next year, with the TAC a decrease of 48 per from the current year.

The latest delivery for Ocean Infinity completes the 86-metre class of Armada offshore support vessels with the final two in the 78-metre class to be completed soon. One of the 78-metre class, the 3 year old Armada 78 01, berthed at the Greenhead Base in March and April during Brent decommissioning.

The coastguard helicopter based at Sumburgh was tasked to the floating production, storage and offloading vessel Glen Lyon, 60 nautical miles west-north-west of Foula, where a crewman was in need of medical attention. But the helicopter was stood down with it unsafe to land due to the weather.

The new synthetic all-weather pitch in Lerwick is to be formally opened tomorrow. Quite sensibly it will be called North Loch Park, in honour of the North Loch which was drained into the Clickimin Loch in the 1960s. It was then infilled as the Lerwick dump, taking over from the South Lochside dump.

The 129 metre Faroese container ship Selfos is at the Greenhead Base after being towed there by the 57 metre Norwegian anchor handler BB Ocean, also being towed alongside by the Knab and pushed alongside by the Kebister.
