Joeys first peek out of the pouch at around 22 weeks, begin leaving the pouch and feeding independently at 28 weeks, and permanently leave the pouch at approximately 41 weeks.

Despite these threats, conservation efforts are making a difference. In 2009, the YUS Conservation Area was established to protect the rainforest in the northern Huon Peninsula. Named after the Yopno, Uruwa, and Som rivers, providing a crucial sanctuary for tree-kangaroos and other wildlife.

They face multiple threats that put their survival at risk. Deforestation due to logging, agriculture, and oil drilling is rapidly destroying their rainforest home. Hunting is another serious issue—local communities hunt them for meat and fur, further reducing their already small population.
