Each time I watch York City play, Joe Felix seems to be used in a different role in the build-up.

• Right-back
• Left-back
• Inverted full-back into a double-pivot
• #10 in a 3-2-5

A key part of Adam Hinshelwood’s fluid system. 🔑

Ollie Pearce is proving why he was the hottest property on the market in the summer.

Leads the press with intensity, aggressive in duels, can drop deep to overload the midfield, offers an outlet in transition, and has devastating quality in-front of goal.

14 in 21 so far. ⚽️🔝

This meant Hartlepool had to defend deep on the edge of their penalty area for long spells.

When they did so, their wingers, Charman and Grey, worked hard to consistently track back all the way into the defensive line.

From Barnet's goal-kicks, Hartlepool had a hybrid pressing structure.

Ferguson, the LB, marked a #10 but could jump to the RWB; Featherstone could either press onto the pivot, or retreat to the #10 if Ferguson pressed; and Hunter started central, but could jump to the LWB.

Hartlepool limited Barnet to just 0.97 expected goals - their lowest total in any National League match so far this season.

They now haven't conceded in the league at Victoria Park in almost two months, and gave a defensive masterclass versus Barnet in a 0-0 draw.

But the evening was all about Altrincham.

Their physicality was too much for York, and their transitional threat and difference-makers in the final-third won them the match convincingly. 🔴

This was just York's third National League loss of the season.

Hinshelwood will learn from his mistakes and his side will still be in the title race come the end of the season. 🔴

Altrincham built in a 4-2-4, and York pressed in man-to-man fashion all across the pitch. Pearce pressed with Thomas from the front, and the rest of the block matched up.

This forced Altrincham to regularly 'go long' from defence which made it difficult for them to safely build.

York built play in a 3-2-5 shape, with Felix inverting from left-back into the pivot next to Hunt.

Further forward, Pearce and Aguiar were in the half-spaces in-between the front-three.

Phil Parkinson's Altrincham beat National League title-hopefuls York City 3-0 on Tuesday night, and they demonstrated the perfect way to beat Adam Hinshelwood's side.

Southend went with a 4-3-3 from the start on Tuesday.

I think it will just be a short-term fix until some players return to full fitness.

There are some tactical benefits to it, such as a greater threat in transition, but I’m not convinced by it in the medium-term.

Callum Stead is one of the most multifaceted forwards in the National League!

He can drop deep to assist the build-up, run in-behind, offer an outlet after defending deep, lead the press with intensity, and thrive in the half-spaces.

He’s averaging 0.51 goals per 90 for Barnet this season, too!

Woking, on the other hand, generally went long from goal-kicks and also formed a 3-2-5 during open play.

They weren’t as persistent with attempting to ‘play out’ as Barnet, and Barnet’s 5-2-3 block matched up.
November 25, 2024 at 1:48 PM
However, once Barnet built down one side, Akinola, one of the #6’s, often became zonal and the far-side winger tucked inside onto the now-free pivot player.

Barnet formed a 4-2-5 shape from goal-kicks, with the outside centre-backs splitting.

Woking pressed in man-to-man fashion all across the pitch, although Barnet did have a +1 through goalkeeper Hayes.

Barnet made it back-to-back victories on Saturday with a 2-0 win versus Woking, as they look to keep within touching distance of York and Forest Green at the top of the division.

Joe Felix is proving to be a crucial part of Adam Hinshelwood’s system at York City.

His profile and tactical understanding enables him to be used in a number of different roles within the build-up; whether that be as a full-back, in the pivot, or in the last line of attack. 👇
November 25, 2024 at 1:45 PM
We don’t know what the result would’ve been if it was 11v11 for the full 90.

However, Hinshelwood’s set-up with & without the ball meant it would’ve been very likely York would have controlled possession and sustained attacks, giving his side the best possible chance of winning.

On the other hand, York pressed Yeovil’s 3-2-5 in man-to-man fashion right the way across the pitch.

Their front-three pressed high, Aguiar and Armstrong marked the pivot, and Hunt dropped deeper to man-mark a Yeovil #10.
November 24, 2024 at 2:45 PM
To counter this, Yeovil set-up in a 4-4-2 mid-block with Plant pushing into the midfield from his left wing-back position, leaving behind a back-four; and Shaw pushing forward to press alongside Jarvis in attack.
November 24, 2024 at 2:45 PM
In typical Adam Hinshelwood fashion, York used a fluid 4-1-4-1 formation which could turn into a 4-2-4 if Armstrong, one of the #8’s, dropped; or a 3-2-5 if Felix inverted alongside Hunt, the #6, from right-back.
November 24, 2024 at 2:45 PM
It’s harsh to be too critical of Yeovil yesterday after they had to play almost the entirety of the match with ten men.

However there were clear signs, even after that early stage of the match, that York’s tactics were going to be too much for them to handle.

Yeovil’s next two matches will give us a great insight into whether Mark Cooper’s tactics are conducive to getting them competing at the top of the National League.

They’re currently 8th, one point from the play-offs, but play the two best tactical teams in the division next.

As yesterday's match vs. Forest Green proved, the single pivot that York sometimes use has the potential to be exposed in defensive transition - as I identified in my tactical analysis article for @analystsbar.bsky.social.

It had a direct influence in Forest Green’s second goal in a 2-0 victory.
November 17, 2024 at 9:28 PM
York switched to a 4-1 build-up shape once Batty was replaced by Armstrong.

This left Hunt isolated in the midfield, forced York to play more aggressively, and left them open in transition if they allowed possession to be turned over.
