Each time I watch York City play, Joe Felix seems to be used in a different role in the build-up.

• Right-back
• Left-back
• Inverted full-back into a double-pivot
• #10 in a 3-2-5

A key part of Adam Hinshelwood’s fluid system. 🔑

Ollie Pearce is proving why he was the hottest property on the market in the summer.

Leads the press with intensity, aggressive in duels, can drop deep to overload the midfield, offers an outlet in transition, and has devastating quality in-front of goal.

14 in 21 so far. ⚽️🔝

Hartlepool limited Barnet to just 0.97 expected goals - their lowest total in any National League match so far this season.

They now haven't conceded in the league at Victoria Park in almost two months, and gave a defensive masterclass versus Barnet in a 0-0 draw.

🚨🆕✍️ Southend United are still yet to reach the levels of consistency from last season.

In this in-depth article, I examine why that has been the case; delving into player availability issues, recruitment and tactics; and detail my solution.

Southend went with a 4-3-3 from the start on Tuesday.

I think it will just be a short-term fix until some players return to full fitness.

There are some tactical benefits to it, such as a greater threat in transition, but I’m not convinced by it in the medium-term.

🚨🆕✍️ Southend United used a 4-3-3 formation from the start versus Woking.

In this article, I break down how the profile of players at head coach Kevin Maher’s disposal fit the system, and assess its medium-term suitability.

Callum Stead is one of the most multifaceted forwards in the National League!

He can drop deep to assist the build-up, run in-behind, offer an outlet after defending deep, lead the press with intensity, and thrive in the half-spaces.

He’s averaging 0.51 goals per 90 for Barnet this season, too!

Barnet made it back-to-back victories on Saturday with a 2-0 win versus Woking, as they look to keep within touching distance of York and Forest Green at the top of the division.

Joe Felix is proving to be a crucial part of Adam Hinshelwood’s system at York City.

His profile and tactical understanding enables him to be used in a number of different roles within the build-up; whether that be as a full-back, in the pivot, or in the last line of attack. 👇

It’s harsh to be too critical of Yeovil yesterday after they had to play almost the entirety of the match with ten men.

However there were clear signs, even after that early stage of the match, that York’s tactics were going to be too much for them to handle.

Yeovil’s next two matches will give us a great insight into whether Mark Cooper’s tactics are conducive to getting them competing at the top of the National League.

They’re currently 8th, one point from the play-offs, but play the two best tactical teams in the division next.

The above matches all take place tomorrow, and I’m aiming to detail as many of the tactics on display as possible on here before the mid-week round of fixtures… 👀

Very proud of @shrimperstats.bsky.social and @tomhwilliams23.bsky.social for their nominations in The FCA Awards. Both work incredibly hard at what they do. Not just the visible content, but the planning and graft beneath it all.

Congratulations to all the winners this year

As yesterday's match vs. Forest Green proved, the single pivot that York sometimes use has the potential to be exposed in defensive transition - as I identified in my tactical analysis article for @analystsbar.bsky.social.

It had a direct influence in Forest Green’s second goal in a 2-0 victory.
November 17, 2024 at 9:28 PM
Both of Forest Green's goals yesterday in a 2-0 victory were straight off the back of York's build-up.
