today my friend, a teacher, was asking me about work and said “if you could tell me one thing right now, what would it be?”

and i told her that the attack on senator padilla and the murders in minnesota are just the beginning; that more violence is coming, and burying your head isn’t an option.

There is nothing comforting about “I’m just as scared as you” coming from the legislative branch that’s supposed to keep checks and balances on the executive. While she thought it was relatable, it is actually mortifying.

This is a very good and useful news story. It reports on DOGE’s understanding that people hate them and what they’re planning to fix it.

It notes, in detail, that what they say they are doing (streamline/improving gov’t tech) was already being done by 18F, a gov agency they blithely destroyed.

Ruth was my editor when I contributed to the Post. She’s the best, as a human being and a journalist.

I can’t imagine how painful to her the destruction of the institution to which she devoted her amazing career as a reporter, editorial writer, and editor must be.

It’s heartbreaking.

This is the key exchange:

“Vance: Have you said thank you once?

Zelensky: A lot of times.

Vance: No, in this entire meeting, have you said thank you?”

People have pointed out that Zelensky has thanked the people of the US many times.

But he didn’t praise Trump in the meeting.

From the beginning of his first term. Trump wanted to have a military parade in DC. “His” generals said no, because the streets would buckle under the tanks/trucks, and because they felt it was un-American.

Those generals are gone now.
