Ironically, he got through the Boxer Rebellion and the Great War without a scratch. Only to loose his leg to gangrene. After nicking his toe with a pen knife. While trying to cut his toenails.
He had attempted to join the Home Guard at the start of WW2. But was deemed unfit. So became a ARP warden

My first bf did persuade me to grow a goatee. Pretty much everybody said it didn't suit me. So I never tried again
