Meaning is not inherent. It's an exercise in communication between subject and object. We used to have systems of meaning that defined themselves objectively, but we now see that objectivity is an illusion. We should be able to build a new world from that, but the old world holds us back.

it's such an iconic performance because like, yes, there's some "cross-dressing is wild and wacky!" going on in its appeal, but it just breezes right past it into "oh this is actually really good!" instead of dwelling on it and rubbing your nose in it. it's perfect
