So ill be posting the good and bad news from Kittiwakery ANS 2025 season over the next few weeks...

First, we have been over-run with corvids in 2025 inc jackdaws, carrion crows and magpies..

Breaking news!

November, 2024, came in at the second warmest in recorded history, at 1.62°C above the pre-industrial baseline.

Starting in June, 2023, there have now been 18 consecutive months above the pre-2023 record high, likely the hottest string of 18 months in the last 120,000+ years.

To give you an idea of how many days it took to go through ‘real’ motion detections.. between us, it was 26 days. We had estimated 37 videos per hoir and it actually translated to 14 videos p/h .. again a serious underestimate of effort.. CPUEK might be a new metric..

From our rapid subsampling of videos half way through the season, SWL had estimated 40% of videos had 'real' kittiwake in them. Erm. No. 70% of videos had 'real' kittiwake in, so we underestimated the task ahead of us...

Of the 1268 false motion detections, most were either a) vessels on the Tyne b) feathers on fake-fluffy chicks waving in the wind or c) flies. Thank goodness we didnt have more cameras in place! More to follow..

Kittiwakery camera/videos update:

So Biodiverse Consulting installed 2 cameras on 2 ledges of 20 possible ledges on the Shoney Wind Ltd & FLI Structures Kittiwakery on the NNW and SSE faces...... So 4236 motion detection videos later.. of those, 2968 videos had kittiwake.
