For a more current example, basically everyone on the left and quite a few moderates hate John Fetterman, but few of them will say that Mehmet Oz would have been a better choice even in hindsight.

Conspiracists fixate on Epstein's death (which probably was a suicide, possibly allowed to happen but otherwise genuine) and ignore the real mystery which is Acosta giving a convicted sex offender the mother of all sweetheart deals, and getting rewarded for it.
