Tinkering with vintage consoles and computers, plus whatever else I can get my hands on. Here to learn and share.
Have you ever seen a Sega of America refurb sticker? Now you have!

This came with a Nomad I bought second-hand so I’m not sure if the sticker was originally on the console or if it was always on the manual, but I like the implication that the manual was ‘reconditioned’ and ‘100% tested’ by SoA.

Got an untested Amiga to work on and… I can’t tell you the last time I saw a Commodore with intact warranty seals. Especially an Amiga!

I’ll probably take these off with hot air and put them somewhere special as a souvenir.

You can push the microswitch on the base to switch between different animations. The LEDs fade in and out gently, you can use USB or battery power, and honestly the whole package is really nice! I’ll probably end up gluing the battery pack to the base so it doesn’t get tugged off, but I’m a big fan.

Check out that tiny resistor! A bit small for a “beginner” kit but not too bad if you’ve done SMD work before. The manual does a good job of walking you through things and makes sure to mention that tantalum caps have their positive side marked - helpful if you’re used to electrolytics.

Making another Christmas-y soldering kit! This one is much nicer than the last one, and I was excited to see some SMD parts! I was almost disappointed that the microcontroller came pre-installed. :P

Recently I’ve been making a few of these soldering-ornament-kit-things you can find online. They’re festive, make a fun personal gift, and (perhaps most importantly) they’re a good excuse to practice soldering. I used this one to try a new lead-free solder and it turned out okay!

I got an Apple IIe and was having some RAM issues with the 80-column card. Opened it up to check… and it’s all MT-branded RAM, which is notoriously unreliable in old equipment.

I’ll check em but they’re probably all toast lol

Oh well. It’s all socketed so it should be an easy fix!

Opened up a “parts” Macintosh today and… yeah. That’s probably not gonna buff out.

In better news, the case and CRT are in good shape!

If you don't need individual turbo controls for each button, Sega made a really nice six-button turbo pad that's pretty common and affordable. But if you do, the only options are third-party stuff (there's a lot of them) or Sega's Arcade Stick 6B.
