The lecture will be followed by a panel discussion with Douwe Haenen and moderator Anneleen Lemmens. In between, there will be an artistic intervention by Yousra Benfquih, who will deliver a letter about consent, coloniality and language.

🥇The winner? None other than Ward Leloup, our brilliant and much-loved Research Support Officer at SHOC! With the fewest transcription errors, Ward earned the title of Best Palaeographer of the Low Countries!

In parallel, he is preparing an FWO application for a PhD project on the emergence and application of “mental sciences” (psychology and psychiatry) in colonial French-speaking Central Africa between 1900 and 1960.

Drawing on military tribunal archives, Lukas will examine how murder and violence were legally addressed in early colonial Congo, as well as the methodological challenges posed by these sources.
