On 4 October, palaeographers from Flanders & the Netherlands gathered in St-Truiden for the finals of the Wat Staat Daer? Palaeography Contest. After an online preselection, the finalists had to transcribe 3 texts from the 14th, 15th & 17th centuries.

Lukas Van Oost starts at SHOC

Lukas (b. 2000) studied History at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (2022–2025) and Art History at Ghent University (2018–2022). His research centers on the colonial history of Central Africa.

Dr. De Mûelenaere obtained a PhD in political history (2016) from Antwerp University. Her disssertation explored forgotten militarization processes in Belgian society between 1890 and 1914, and was published by Leuven University Press in 2019.

Alongside this project, Axel will participate in the research group’s weekly meetings and seminars. He is also working on his bachelor’s thesis, which investigates the mobility of soldiers and deserters in the early modern period.

Mathijs (°1993, Roeselare) studied History at Ghent University, specialising in Medieval Studies, and defended his PhD in December 2023 on the struggle for urban space in medieval Bruges (ca. 1100–1600). His research also explores medieval rural history and the knowledge profile of Jan van Eyck.

He also contributed to the PARDONS project at the State Archives, where he worked with HTR software to transcribe and index early modern pardon letters.

Supervised by Bart Lambert, Frederik Buylaert and Thijs Lambrecht, her research investigates the circulation of ideas in the late medieval Low Countries through the study of village ordinances, specifically focusing on food safety and supply.

Bob Pierik joins SHOC!

As of 1 September, Bob Pierik will join VUB and the SHOC research group as an assistant professor of early modern history. At VUB, Bob will be teaching courses on early modern, urban and cultural history.

From September 2025, Daan Huysman will be part of SHOC as a TVO student under the supervision of Reinout Vander Hulst. Daan will contribute to the DIGICOLJUST-2 and GUSANGIRA projects, which investigate court martial archives of the Belgian colonization of Congo, Rwanda and Burundi.

SHOC had the honour of attending Rose Southard PhD defence, "Biting the hand that Feeds. Contesting the Food Guilds in 18th-century Brussels". A successful and engaging defence followed by a lovely reception: the ideal recipe for the start of a new chapter! Hearty congratulations, Dr. Southard!
