Here I stand in Islamabad, Pakistan, where children, Afghan refugees, and the poorest wade through mountains of waste every day, scavenging for recyclables.

This is what “recycling” really looks like. 🧵
Terrifying. To tell to ten million people to simply leave?!

This is only a story because the husband is Italian and the family is white.
Countless working-class and racialised families have been torn apart by these same rules since they were introduced.
They just didn’t get a Guardian feature.

With no safe routes available to ppl fleeing danger, irregular journeys to the UK will continue.

Our MPs must understand there are realistic, humane alternatives to REGULATE the arrival of asylum seekers.

🙏 Pls email your MP to attend this important event help.care4calais.org/page/168077/...
Will your MP support 'Change' and back safe routes?
Take two minutes to email your local MP and ask them to attend the launch of Care4Calais' new safe routes report.

Israel has chosen to mark the first days of Ramadan by blocking humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Still, our government refuses to implement sanctions and defend international law.

There is no other way of putting it: this is a resumption of genocide — and our government is complicit.

In Ramadan too. Another horrific move.

Immigration stats are out.

As predicted: sharp decreases everywhere except boats.

Work visas down 37% including down by 81% (eighty one percent) for Health & Social Care Worker visas specifically.

Is this good? www.gov.uk/government/s...

Great to see more conversation on the impact of forever chemicals on women's bodies.

Plastics and chemicals are disrupting cycles, causing reproductive disorders and cancers, getting absorbed by the placenta and breast milk. Yet hardly anyone is talking about it.

The truth is, we don’t care anymore.

We cared when it was Alan Kurdi but we have seen it too many times now. What’s another 800 people drowned? It happens every day. Who’s going to do or say anything? It’s just the price of our failed obsession with “control”

We know the Greek coastguard systematically illegally pushes back migrant boats & leaves them adrift without engines in international waters.

It’s still horrific to hear them cynically & deliberately try to palm off the Pylos ship with 650-800 people who ended up drowned, anywhere but here #r4today

The rich get to buy safety and opportunity while migrants from the global majority drown, get detained and are turned away.

We always knew-borders are only for the poor.

You know that plastic you put in the recycling bin? You’re trying to do your bit, but a lot of it doesn't actually get recycled. Instead, it's shipped overseas to places like Turkey, where it's dumped, burned, or left to rot.

This poisons local communities, pollutes rivers, and chokes wildlife. 💀

Recycling alone won’t save us. We need to stop making so much plastic in the first place.

Time for real action. Time for a Global Plastics Treaty. 🌍

The real fix? A legally binding Global Plastics Treaty that forces corporations & governments to reduce plastic production instead of just shifting the mess around.

Less plastic = less pollution. Simple.
February 20, 2025 at 10:57 AM
Recycling is the single greatest scam of the modern era. Sold to us as the solution, but in reality, it’s a corporate smokescreen to shift responsibility onto consumers while they keep churning out plastic. We don’t need better recycling—we need to stop plastic at the source!
🚨 Spoiler: Recycling isn't saving us from plastic pollution. In fact, it's making things worse.

Turkey promised to be a "zero waste" nation. Instead, it became Europe’s plastic dumping ground.

Let's talk about why we need to cut plastic production - not just recycle more. 🧵👇

What the government can’t afford:

❌Lifting children out of poverty
❌Disability benefits
❌Compensation for WASPI women
❌Winter fuel allowance

What the government can afford: an extra £13.4 billion on the military.

Never any money for the poor. Always enough money for war.
