My first #artwork in months - I wanted to try a geological "field" sketch - submarine fan deposits in the Cretaceous Point Loma Formation at Point Loma, San Diego, and overlying Pleistocene deposits. Locally, the PLF consists of repetitive sandstone/mudstone couplets. #watercolor #geology

A grassy hill is present above. A large tidepool is present below, dotted with concretions that have weathered out of the Point Loma Formation. In the foreground is a table-like rock exposure showing the repetive bedding.

Happy #FossilFriday! I need some help with this one. I think this is a Megalodon tooth and posted the description below. I know the description doesn't read the tooth curling left but I honestly think this old shark just had a janky tooth. Any input is appreciated! #Paleontology #Nature
A pale grey shark tooth with jagged edges and a dark dental band sits in the palm of an adult hand. It measures approximately 2 1/4 x 1 3/4 x .5 inches (57mm x 44mm x 12mm). Description reads: Tooth from the extinct megatoothed shark Carcharocles chubutensis. Teeth of C. chubutensis are distinguished from those of C. megalodon by having serrated cusplets that are weakly separated from the main crown,. The root lobes have shallow concavities on the mesial and distal sides, giving the root a pinched appearance. Lateral cusplets are more developed on posterior teeth, occasionally becoming as deeply notched as those from C. angustidens.
