I'm reading submissions of short solstice writing for the next few days, so hold up your candles and walk into the woods.

Goodnight from The Sisters fish and chip shop, where the pickled goose eggs are sold-out due to rumour they cure lover’s droop. Goodnight from the steps of the Foundling Hospital at Coreham, where the temporal shades of abandoned babes wail for their mothers. Goodnight from Hookland.

On the sidewalk I saw two women approach each other to talk, one wearing a leopard sweater and the other a leopard skirt, and as they drew together it felt like I'd encountered Voltron in the wild.

If somebody local and fun wants to see Bruce Molsky and Darol Anger at Passim on Sunday (and who wouldn't?) they should buy the seat sharing a table with me.

In a couple of days I'm going to open a quick, experimental call for very short, solstitial submissions at @necessaryfiction.com, something I've wanted to do for the past couple of years but didn't quite get it together. Further details TK.

Oh great, another terrible use for AI. The book is really good, though, and deserves better than this. bookshop.org/a/8189/97814...
AI has scraped my second book and produced this shitty comic. Firstly, the winds are in all the wrong places. Secondly, what the hell is happening in that second panel? Thirdly, this is plagiarism and totally unlicensed. Have any other authors had this done 'for free' to their books?

Until enjoying this thread from @jeremymillar.bsky.social I don't think I'd ever seen Theibaud's art except on the cover of Helen DeWitt's The English Understand Wool, without knowing whose painting it was. Now I really want to see an exhibit in person.
Went to the Wayne Thiebaud exhibition today and, inevitably, it was absolutely delicious.

Great to see that @unmpress.bsky.social published a new paperback edition of Stanley Crawford's essay collection A RIVER IN WINTER. A terrific book cover to cover but "Free Lunch" is a particular favorite of mine.

Two women walked past me a moment ago as one said to the other, “He’s in partially supported housing,” so my thoughts are with whoever this guy is in his half-built home.

Whenever I pass this sign I think of Peter Markus’ brother stories. Two brothers, clutching their fish in the mud, cursing the moon.
