Coming back to life, slowly. Painting rusty chromed parts is 🫠

I knew it would take some time, but I don't even want to count the hours I already spent on this thing...

Testing a Kiev 5 after some DIY repair (stuck frame counter, stripped nut in the winding arm). I spent years gathering Zeiss lenses, on and off, I'd like a platform to use these.

I hope it works, I really don't intend to do this regularly 😬

Actually, the other 6mm was in better shape and is now OK to use. Still have to finish cleaning the accessories.
Even the latch of the small wooden box was rusted out and had to be replaced 😮

The big one can be a WW Boley, unmarked. Crusty, but still functional. I'll have to decide if it is still worth the time spent cleaning it, removing the flaky nickel plating and the surface rust, and repainting.

One 6mm Lorch starting a new life. I cleaned the base and some levers.

Last week-end I hauled home these lathes, at least 10kg of rusty steel...

1 WW pattern 8mm Boley
1 8mm Lorch, incomplete
2 older Lorch 6mm
+ lots of useful bits and pieces

Not critical for me as I have what I need already, but it makes me sad seeing these rust away.

My chances of finding a correct set jewel were close to zero. So I drilled out the setting, push fitted the bushing, reamed it, push fitted the jewel and ajusted its height.

Now after cleaning and rebuilding, this Longines is upgraded from junk to timekeeper.

After the staff swap, I discovered that a balance jewel was "repaired" previously... a modern flat jewel was just shoved in place of a domed one, flopping around into the destroyed setting. Nice job.

So I searched for a modern domed jewel and a bushing...

I've been given a Nikon D810, it will replace my D800 which has focus problems. No more taking 5 close ups to have one sharp! Also, the mirror feels more damped. 😀

=> Pictures, yay! Vintage french thingies I got recently (glass cartridge #fountainpen, Gibbs adjustable razor)

Back to work last week, with among other things a balance staff swap.
1 remove hairspring & roller
2 machine off the broken staff from the balance itself (on the lathe)
3 mount the new staff with a punching stake
4 put back everything in the same place

I also put a roll in the older prewar Automat, that I like a lot. Old uncoated lenses can be nice in some situations. This one is probably a keeper.

After years waffling about my Hassy 500 (service it? get a 80 instead of the 100 I don't like much? get a C/M and be able to focus a shot in less than 2 minutes with a proper screen?)...

I got a SL66. 😅

Now, how many 'flexes are too many? I may sell the 500 and the 2.8C if the SL66 feels OK.

Preparing a small serie for an exhibition in September.

I think I got the order right?

I also spent a little on a sapphire crystal. The OEM is a plain mineral and scratch easily, someone makes a convincing lookalike which is way more durable, but shinier. Worth the cost, it is a chunky watch, the kind you bang on a doorframe the 1st day 😅

However the Omega 861 mainplate was junked long ago, because the minute wheel pivot was broken off.

I had to make another pivot as I did not want to spend money for another one, or use the Lemania and make a Franken (it would have worked the same though)

Finished the Speedmaster MKII this week.

I started off with a case and a dial, found a handset and bought a Lemania movement. I then rebuilt it as an Omega movement (parts are mostly the same) using spares I had laying around.

Played around recently with old brass Leitz reloadable cassettes and compatible bulk loaders. It makes quick 10rolls tests much easier.
