Incompetence is scary because it implies loneliness. But loneliness is also painful because it implies inferiority, which is the value judgement you internalize about being incompetent.
This emotional association is probably mainly inspired by the fact that social failures have social consequences and that loneliness feels bad. But there's also probably a circular feedback component to this pain:
