🚨 Policy win on maintenance grants! 🚨

@bphillipsonmp.bsky.social has announced that the Government will introduce maintenance grants for students from low income households, on priority courses.

This is a very positive step in the right direction, but there's still further to go ⤵️

forget where I read it but there is a theory that one reason everyone is going quietly insane is that we used to have lots of mental "dead time" (travelling, meaningless but necessary tasks &c) and now we can fill every waking minute with optimised content and we're not built for it

It is a positive step, and it is great to see the government working with those with expertise on this issue. The challenge for MedEd is to think about how we measure class and address barriers to entry and progression.
🚨 Sutton Trust policy win 🚨

We’ve been working with the Department of Health and Social Care @rthonwesstreeting.bsky.social & @karinsmythmp.bsky.social on ways to open up the medicine profession for working class young people.

This is a major milestone in widening access to careers in medicine ⬇️

There is huge support for action to improve social mobility in this country 👍

Our polling shows that the British public are united in their belief that all young people should be provided with equal opportunities.

There is a clear desire to level the playing field.

Despite increasing efforts to widen participation, only 5% of entrants to medical school in 2021 came from the lowest socioeconomic groups.

Tackling persistent inequalities in access to medicine is critical to ensure that expansion delivers a diverse future workforce
