Been using the Kryptonite Minis for ages. Decided to switch to an angle grinder proof lock. Failed to realize how chonky it is. Will continue using Mini 😓

This was supposed to be an inexpensive beater, but I lack self control.

Well, the 64gb PATA SSD I’ve been using is apparently a non starter on this controller.

I decided to send it and try a 256GB mSATA SSD I had lying around - something that has never played well with old world Macs — and it worked first try. Go figure.

Anyway I guess this poor thing has 256gb now.

“It just works”

So the new IDE cable which I bought to reach the PCI card is still too short and it’s not booting off the PCI controller x_x

You’d think that the late-90s Apple engineers would be considerate of the face that someone may want to resurrect these machines in 30 years with tech that doesn’t exist yet.

One of the limitations of the beige G3 Powermacs is the 66MHz system bus, meaning you’re not gonna get as much of a performance boost of of an SSD as you might think.

Enter the Sonnet Tempo ATA/133 IDE controller.

Now to find out if it will actually boot off this thing…

Ohh these M-Discs are so pretty!

(Currently archiving my photography library onto these 100GB / 1000-year archival discs and got distracted by a shiny)

Installed the actual graphics drivers, seems a bit less smooth but a bit more stable

It still freezes sometimes, but recovers itself after like ten seconds. That’ll be a fun one to debug 🙃

Unreal Tournament is hella fun, until it freezes my whole system 💀

Thanks nyan cat!

Which, it turns out, takes a while at the 12mbps I can get out of usb 1.1
April 15, 2025 at 1:50 AM
Turns out my usb support extensions were too recent. Needed to drop down a few versions to get it to see usb devices.

Anyway, casually dumping a couple dozen gigabytes of games onto this poor old thing.

My Razer wireless mouse works flawlessly too ;)

These things are such a hassle to work on, but I’ve done it so many times at this point that I can practically do a tear down on one of these with my eyes closed.

Keys replaced, SSD installed, Tiger installer, seems to be working perfectly! The optical drive doesn’t sound super healthy, but it works! Now just need to get some more ram for it and it’s off to the races!

One of the easier “for parts” machines I’ve managed to restore.
