Love finding wasps nests this time of year. These Polistes fuscatus paper wasps are both “queens”. One will be dominant and they will share reproduction to some extent. They are likely sisters born last August #wasplove

This male paper wasp can’t sting-he doesn’t have the parts for it. Only lady Hymenoptera (ants, bees, wasps) can sting. The stinger is a modified ovipositor (ovo = egg).

Even without the stinger, males still make a stinging motion…just with their genitalia.

New paper out from PhD student Caleb Vogt in BMC Biology

We looked at individual and societal level differences in behavior between lab and genetically wild mice in large outdoor enclosures

1. Males were similar between groups and made territories
