Former 30-year-old. Used to be in punk bands but super boring now. English PhD student. He/him.
Confused by traditional Venetian blinds, is there ever a world where I’d want to jack up on side versus the other?

They are both ultimately music for middle schoolers, but Alkaline Trio is more “let’s share a coffin and drink each others’ blood” while Blink-182 is “pee pee, poo,” yet somehow Blink aged better.

Me at 17: Khalil Gibran is revelatory
Me at 27: Gibran is kind of corny

I keep thinking that reading more will make me smarter, but I think I’ve hit a plateau.

Glasses are so unserious you’re telling me I have to bend the light again because my eyes are dumb

We used to poke each other on FB like they were streaks on Snapchat. (Layered outdated analogy here.)

If it feels overwhelming to choose individuals to help in Gaza while not being able to help others, I am a regular donor to the Sameer Project and really vouch for the on the ground mutual aid work they have been doing.

Yeah the Nazi bots are getting even worse over on Twitter (even with me having blocked over 10k accounts). So still Tumblr vibes over here?

Anyone still poking each other on FB?

Just had old man flashback to my brother and mom having cellphones with long range walkie-talkie capabilities so they didn’t have to use minutes if close enough to each other.

Still thrown off from booking this Chinese band years ago, but then they came to play and were a bunch of white guy expats who teach in China and come back to tour through the U.S. every summer.

Where is everyone getting these advanced unproofed copies of novels that fill my nearby little free libraries?

This "Florida Guantanamo" thing must be that excesses of the imperial periphery returning to its core that I've heard so much about

I think a lot of directors (and the rest of the cast and crew!) put a lot into their movies, but that video Coogler made explaining aspect ratios was tremendous PR for Sinners. I know people who went to see it purely because of that.

Why are so many retro and local gaming shops right wing coded?

Awe, as someone only lightly into Star Wars, I enjoyed the formation of the scrappy group and the Storm Troopers in a tropical setting.
Okay I’m watching Rogue One again post-Andor and,
unfortunately, large portions of this movie still kinda suck.

The Endangered Species Act itself is already only a half measure/stop gap against the continued loss of diversity on our planet. Making it so “harm” only covers direct harm to animals and not their habitats is narrow thinking and dangerous.
Do not forget to submit a comment to the feds to not rescind the definition of “harm” in the ESA!!!

Seven ChatGPT written finals and counting. I don't think anyone outside of academia really understands how big of an issue this is. We're about to be begin graduating generations of students who have offloaded the entire learning process of their degrees onto predictive algorithms.

Serious question: what is going on with those academic press books, published even just a few years ago, that are like $100–new and used?

moratorium on making fun of any bad musicians who come out in support of Gaza

I don’t know why but I want to share a flashback I had to my middle school biology teacher who had us work in the school greenhouse for the entire spring semester. We didn’t learn a thing and then he sold all the plants at the local farmer’s market and we didn’t see a dime for our labor.

Niche complaint: I feel like number lock should be the default on a keyboard. I should press it to turn the numeric pad off, not the other way around.

Reading Pynchon is making me realize how factory navel gazing, uncharitable, flinching, and stagnant my MFA workshops were.

It took me until my 30s to finally watch The Godfather and even with all the buildup, reappraisals, spoilers, memes, and hype, it was flippin’ great.

Replacing the concept of diplomacy with “making deals” is predictable for this admin but still so incredibly stupid.
