Huge fan of horror movies, father of two, and computational biologist.
This feels like SQUID GAMES but with a way worse prize.

I’d also say that a distinct event occurs to make Sentry into Void. Skinny Steve and Captain America are “different people” - the serum amplifies him. But I don’t think DID is a valid interpretation of that difference. Not apples to apples but more similar than Moon Knight

I’d compare it to THE SUBSTANCE in that DID is a valid interpretation, but I’d argue bipolar disorder is the clearer metaphor. IMO there’s no comparison to MOON KNIGHT. Robert, Bob, and Bobby are all the same person but the name says more about the person talking to him.

You can read it as DID, but there are no explicit alters, only a reference to “mental illness,” and I personally read it more about bipolar disorder.

MILD SPOILERS.

“Confronting a dark past” is a general theme. I read The Void as a manifestation of depression with Sentry as mania.

Are we including mid-credits scenes? Because that would up the number. Definitely a skew towards micro budgets in that distribution when you include horror. CAPTAIN AMERICA and SCREAMBOAT both fall into the same category for mid-credits 😆

So curious what the distribution of budget vs post credit scene is on a large scale 😆

This feels like a horror movie. Rewriting the code away from COBOL is objectively a GOOD thing. Making maintenance and upkeep of the SSA more accessible is GOOD. But being so haphazard about it is horrifying…

Very excited to read this! I have your New French Extremity and 1990s Teen Horror Cycle books on my shelf! Can I ask what cat archetypes there are? This topic somehow sounds both niche and accessible 😆

Yeah, I guess YOU’RE NEXT is almost like having John Wick be the final girl.
March 27, 2025 at 2:56 PM
Literally can’t tell if you want JOHN WICK to be the slasher or the final girl…

And I don’t care. I want both 😆

I guess I’m asking if a “safe” bet is one that you’re okay losing (low budget flop)? Or is it one that you can’t imagine losing (big budget sequel to >$1B success)? I’d say the early BlumHouse model of many micro budget films was a lot of “bad” bets, that only needed one or two hits for success.
March 24, 2025 at 2:02 AM
There’s probably a nice trade off between familiarity of a franchise and budget. BvS is a good example of a “safe” bet that failed. Who wouldn’t bet that would make $1B? Whereas JOHN CARTER was a new franchise with a $250M budget.
March 24, 2025 at 1:57 AM
But how do you define “safe.” Is it how much money, or how likely it is to succeed? DEADPOOL was arguably a bigger risk at $58M (standalone mutant in an R-rated superhero movie) than DEADPOOL AND WOLVERINE at $200M (>$750M for EACH previous franchise entry).

Classic phone booth. The wave. The stickers on the backpacks. The diverse little girls. The throwback/vintage art style. I kept scrolling back because this image is truly wonderful.

I think there’s a real challenge incorporating “magic” into the “real world” or modern world. Making it sciency used to be a novel and interesting idea to incorporate. In think ONWARD actually does a great job of why people stopped using magic, and how it’s still whimsical.
March 16, 2025 at 2:17 PM
I like how the MCU handled it. THOR 1/2 turned Norse mythology and magic into advanced aliens and quantum mechanics. The DR. STRANGE and WANDAVISION said “nope, magic and sorcerers and witches are real.” And nobody batted an eye 😆

I appreciate when they acknowledge it at least - the Friends apartment is canonically rent controlled for three generations 😆 Also, don’t forget the bigger bathroom of all - SAW!
March 14, 2025 at 3:02 AM
The practical standpoint is always so easy to forget! Like how so many people live in HUGE houses (because they’re easier to film in, and don’t actively have people living there at the time of filming) vs living in tiny apartments
March 13, 2025 at 10:51 PM
Also, I knew Psycho was the first to show a flushing toilet, but I never knew the Hayes Code outlawed toilets! That’s a new fun fact!
March 13, 2025 at 10:38 PM
Also curious, when you say “public bathroom” are they specifically SHOWING the toilet? Do we differentiate between toilet and FLUSHING toilet? And are there specific trends? Eg how many of the horror movies have the protagonist hiding in a stall while the killer walks through and opens every door 😆
