The focus has been how the church in every age took the story it had been given, re-interpreted, added it's own chapter and passed it on.

Also note when he sticks to his script and when he goes off script. In the condolences part he's sticking to the script pretty closely, but in the vengeance and pettiness part he uses his own words.
