That's interesting! I did a little bit of ancient philosophy too. I still trying to drop a bit of classics into work here and there. Lots of people seem to find it interesting when I pop on quotes from Plato or Cicero.

What a lovely and lively chat. Thank you all for participating, and massive thanks of course to the @lthechat.bsky.social team for facilitating.

That was a useful but if feedback we got from a cpd intervention supporting improv skill for academics - they described a lightbulb moment where they realised you can plan for your improvisations

I can relate. when I started, I carried around a massive reference book to all teaching in case I got asked a question I couldn't answer. It weighed a tonne. I think it was a "safety blanket" in hindsight (a really heavy one).

I think for some they are really frightened especially a large lecture theatre..you see a wall of faces and just not relax into it/or have relevant techniques to change approach on the fly. Always have a Plan B or C; #lthechat

@fidaisyg.bsky.social - also noting the littles vanilla: the best flavour, and essential for making iced coffees in this weather!

I'm thinking back to my classics days... This resonates with the concept of Plutarch's mirrors (I think that's what the theory was called). He wrote biographies that were supposed to be instructional. But bad as well as good - you could learn a lot on what didn't work for you, and so what to avoid.

Similar to the common worry around "how can I fit an active learning activity into this session when it's already overflowing with content I need to lecture about"?
June 18, 2025 at 7:27 PM
That reminds me of the scholarship showing that students.learn better through active learning, but prefer passive leaning and think it's more effective...

I wonder whether I ever learnt to read the room any better than when I started... Or whether I'm just more confident and so I worry about it less?

@santanuvasant.bsky.social that's really interesting. I'm interested in the idea of seeing HE teaching as a performance. Have you experienced a recent change in perception here? I think I now sense less stigma here.

@louiserees.bsky.social I love trick questions! But it's also an invitation to disagree with the blog.

Creativity is interesting! For me, it's such a key motivational factor in why I do the job. I need to feel like I'm being creative and supporting this in others. #lthechat a1
