“As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.”

Shall we call this "creative destruction"?
AI advocates have warned that if every author in the class action filed a claim, it would "financially ruin" the entire industry.
Authors celebrate “historic” settlement coming soon in Anthropic class action
Advocates fear such settlements will “financially ruin” the AI industry.

David Bellos was one of the invaluable advisors for the documentary about literary translation I'm making with my friend Veronica Selver. We will miss his wise and witty counsel.

San Francisco lawyers are getting some immigrants out of prison after a court hearing using habeus corpus. But the lawyers have to act fast after an arrest. Spread the word.
An old legal procedure is getting asylum-seekers out of ICE detention
On Friday, a 20-year-old asylum seeker walked into immigration court at 630 Sansome St. As has become routine, he was arrested and detained.

It was madness. Remember just meeting people places and hoping they showed up?? We were dancing on the head of a pin. Living on a razor's edge
Remember answering the phone and not knowing who was calling?? We were so brave. Never again.

How many more stories like this will pop up? A lot, I bet. And putting aside any visceral response about the election choice this family made, how can they help sour voters on Republicans?

Did Collins and Murkowski flip a coin over who would vote no? Probably not since Collins is up for re-election soon. These two have a long history of voting no and claiming they voted on principle only when the Repubs will clearly prevail, even if they need the VP's vote.

I got to play this for a friend tonight for the first time, someone who has photographed and written about musicians, and he was genuinely surprised at how bright and fun this song is.
sorry, you are telling me baby Mamdani made a music video directed by his perfect mom starting Lupita Nyong'o and we are meant to see this as a downside

Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough is going thru the Senate budget bill all weekend. The more she rejects, the better. For my own sanity and the chance of good news, I'd rather check the news to see what else she rejects than follow the B-52s' flight paths over the Pacific toward Iran.

I've been waiting for the blowhard bromance blowout for months. Who could have predicted it would happen because Musk said something that made sense: Trump's budget bill is an abomination.

The grift comes full circle.

Musk took a $465M government loan to build Tesla—now he’s using DOGE to kill off the very office that helped him succeed—because it might help the next innovator, not him.

This isn’t “efficiency.” It’s sabotage!

Given that there is no civil disorder, insurrection or armed rebellion at present, senior military leaders need to consult with their JAG officers *now* about the potential need to disobey unlawful orders. They should also consult with Democrats on the House and Senate Armed Services Committees.
Here it comes.
