President of Center on Budget and Policy Priorities , formerly OMB/HHS, Nats fan, mom.
The Administration has argued that its policies are good for families and the economy, but ending data collection on whether families can afford food suggests they are far from confident.
September 20, 2025 at 11:00 PM
The Administration has undermined the bipartisan 2025 funding deal by withholding funds, using a partisan rescission bill to cancel funding agreed to on a bipartisan basis, and *remarkably* claiming unilateral authority to hold funds & allow them to expire.

The President’s accusations are baseless. His actions will undermine trust in our country’s economic statistics – widely viewed globally as the gold standard – that are vital to keeping our economy strong and meeting the needs of people and communities across the country.

The new budget information provided today shows a massive disinvestment from public services and investments that are critical to ppl, communities & the economy. These non-defense cuts include:

CBO data & other analyses make the House Republican agenda’s harmful impact crystal clear:

Let’s be clear: in this budget framework there is no way to cut $1.5 trillion in spending while protecting health coverage through Medicaid and food assistance through SNAP.

Amid all the drama, policymakers should stay focused on the bottom line: deep cuts to food assistance & Medicaid leave people unable to afford food or access health coverage. Want lower deficits? Do less in tax cuts & offset them with targeted revenue raisers.
April 10, 2025 at 1:05 PM
In fact, it’s the exact opposite of what policymakers should be doing as the Trump Administration’s tariffs increase the risk of recession -- during weak times, key goals include bolstering spending power for low-income people and relieving state fiscal pressures.
April 8, 2025 at 8:34 PM
While conservatives want to lock in deep cuts, this chart should spur opposition from policymakers & people across the country. Making it harder for people to afford food, healthcare, & education to pay for tax cuts for high-income people should be a non-starter:

What are the tariffs and cuts in Medicaid, SNAP, and student loans being used for? To pay for extending the expiring 2017 tax cuts, which are skewed to the wealthy, and adding more tax cuts for the wealthy on top.
April 4, 2025 at 7:09 PM
And, House Rs want to add more tax cuts on top! www.cbpp.org/blog/house-r...
March 25, 2025 at 5:28 PM
Nearly half of the cost of extending the 2017 tax cuts flow to households making > $321k. A budget that scraps these tax cuts and the deeply harmful cuts to Medicaid, SNAP, and student loans would produce *lower deficits* than the House bud res.
March 25, 2025 at 5:28 PM
Taking away health care & making it harder for people to afford food are being used to offset the exorbitantly expensive tax cuts for households with incomes > $743,000 (top 1% of HHs). Trying to be measured, I have no other word for this than obscene.
March 25, 2025 at 5:28 PM
Rs have proposed cuts that could terminate health coverage for millions of ppl. There’s no way to slash hundreds of billions of dollars from Medicaid w/o taking care & coverage away & shifting impossible decisions to states, despite false claims otherwise. www.cbpp.org/research/hea...
March 25, 2025 at 5:28 PM
Amidst continued high food prices and econ uncertainty from tariffs/DOGE, Rs are pursuing huge cuts to food assistance. One rising proposal? Shift SNAP costs to states, which would likely force them to take away food assistance from families. www.cbpp.org/charts/snap-...
March 25, 2025 at 5:28 PM
With attn turned to how Rs resolve their process disputes on the budget/tax bill, let’s review what really matters: how the R agenda will take away health care & food assistance from ppl who need it to pay for tax cuts the wealthy definitely don’t need. www.cbpp.org/research/fed...

An agenda to lower costs for families? The President has supported the House budget plan that would make it harder for families to afford health care, food and college. #CBPPJointAddress
March 5, 2025 at 2:48 AM
When listening to the President's joint address to Congress tonight, it is worth comparing what he says to the House budget plan he endorsed.
March 5, 2025 at 1:02 AM
We know this because it directs the committees w/ jurisdiction over health coverage through Medicaid, food assistance through SNAP, & student loans & school meals to make massive cuts to offset some of the cost of massive tax cuts assigned to the Ways and Means Committee.
February 21, 2025 at 4:35 PM
Attention now shifts to the House, which is expected to vote next week on House Republicans’ own misguided budget plan: an extreme giveaway to the wealthy at the expense of families who already have a hard time affording food, health care & college.
February 21, 2025 at 4:35 PM
At the same time, the House budget resolution sets a path to use these cuts to pay for trillions in tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations.
February 20, 2025 at 7:36 PM
Here’s where that course is headed: an extreme giveaway to the wealthy at the expense of families who already have a hard time affording food, health care & college.
February 20, 2025 at 7:36 PM
Catering to a set of extreme members, House Republican leaders are reportedly going back to the drawing board to craft a budget that takes health coverage & help buying groceries away from more people and families who struggle to afford the basics.

Taking health care & food away from people who don’t meet red-tape laden work requirements will hurt workers, won’t increase employment, and will push millions into hardship. That’s a terrible price to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy. x.com/meredithllee...

Not an agenda that comports with promises by then-candidate Trump to protect families who struggle financially. For these families, the cost of health care, food, & rent – & the cost & quality of their parents’ nursing home care - are a lot more important than the S&P 500.
