Writing six books at once, can’t get it together to write a simple intro post. Like most of us here, I’ve signed up to fight fascism—but weird poems, plants, music, & art keep me going. This stack of sketch books, journals, & files on top of a photo box is pretty much my life right now. Also, hi!
A charming piece, so lovingly written. I hope Toronto’s increase in native plantings is helping, too. Have been seeing rabbits in our public garden network (The Bee Line, next to the Bloor Line) for years, and many more in the neighbourhood this summer. Reminds me of 90s band The Local Rabbits 🐰
Your weekend #longread: The Local's Nick Hune-Brown asks why he's seeing so many more rabbits in Toronto. "Outside, the world kept turning. Decisions were being made at City Hall...There were important stories to cover. But I couldn’t stop asking people about bunnies." thelocal.to/more-rabbits...

I never used to see rabbits in Toronto. Then they were everywhere. Then I lost my mind.

My ridiculously talented young neighbour who wrote an essay about our community gardens for school sent it to Toronto Today—& they published it! 🌱 www.torontotoday.ca/neighbourhoo...

Not going to be surprised when Doug says oh no we’ve been had … and then, casino. It has always been a casino

This lil lovely thing happened🌱 A young, multi-talented neighbour asked to interview me for an essay assignment about “the most interesting person in your neighbourhood.” Carolina Hogan is a wonderful artist—I’m so honoured.

Does anyone else think about this meme at least once/day? I believe we have all the resources & more to feed, house & care for everyone. I believe in human rights, freedom of expression, & equality. Which makes me the radical left, like Mr. Rogers & Sesame Street

Two words I’d like to see in greater use: traitor and treason. Let’s call it what it is. Not just from history books or old novels or spy films anymore.

During the convoys, there were many people infiltrating far right spaces online, and journalists covering them. I seem to recall mental health guidelines for well-meaning people doing this, as this sort of immersion can break your brain. Thinking this info would be helpful for all of us now…

Small acts of defiance matter. 🧵👇
Part of staying upright means not talking shit about other people’s small acts of defiance by saying shit like “what’s that gonna do in the face of a despots power” or the like.

You know what small acts of defiance do? They keep the flame burning, and they lead to other, bigger acts of defiance.

I've been researching the idea of Unconditional Universal Basic Income since 2013. Here's a collection of findings I've compiled from various UBI experiments and studies of cash transfer programs around the world.

This will be a VERY LONG and ongoing thread focused entirely on empirical evidence. 🧵

⬇️Heck yeah! Important in Canada, as well. In Toronto, we’re incredibly lucky to have the magical TPL (which I don’t see on Bluesky yet). Libraries are community.
It's more important than ever to support your public library. #Libraries are community. They are about opening minds and opening doors. Get a library card, and check out books. Download Libby. Libraries need the stats for funding, which is now uncertain. And thank your librarian.

We love you.

While we’re all wondering what to do about *everything*, please check out Indivisible’s inspiring grassroots organizing work if it’s new to you. They’re in the US, but the same principles apply in Canada & elsewhere. Community-building works—that’s why the alt-right/convoy does it. Book from 2019.

I appreciate all of you who use the Alt-text description for the images you post. As a blind dude I feel so much more included here.

For those of you who forget:
Did you know there’s a reminder in Settings/Accessibility to toggle on & then it won’t let you post image without Alt-text.

Thanks 🙏😎
