Such a great point. But as Public Defenders, we really need to think about our responsibility and capacity to talk about reforms successes. It’s not our day job and there are tons of barriers, but it’s so essential for us to preserve reform gains.
This is one thing that skews the politics of crim legal reform.
There is ONE lawyer whose primary ethical obligation is to the greater: the prosecutor.
Not the defense lawyer.
So tough-on-crime DAs can publicize every example of a reform failing.
Defenders cannot point to client successes.
