The only *common* use case of active servers that significantly deviate from this are game community servers and those are weird exceptions and most people are only in for some bullshit that should be hosted on a wiki

Only like 35yo twitch streamers have servers with channels for different games and every single one i've been in has eventually had to archive everything in favour of General, Off Topic, (Current Popular Game), Memes, and Horny, or all the channels are basically dead

The part you don't seem to get is that the reason Discord took off is that it is both a voice chat app with video and screenshare AND rich text chat with easy image sharing in the same package. The fact nearly every server has a memes channel and a porn channel is 1000% relevant

You gotta consider as well if someone's running stuff like Matrix, they're prolly also gonna have to run a Tailscale server, and handle a lot more storage and services, u end up having to run a spotify alternative, netflix alternative, game servers....

They got massively set back financially by the Destiny 2 release and the plan to make 3 games with 2 expansions each was scrapped due to massive backlash about how D2 was a cash grab for not being an expansion.

it was literally a matter of the team being forced to stay on Destiny 2 as a permanent ever-growing platform instead of being allowed to make Destiny 3 as was originally planned, because the ever growing platform meant more profit, and now the game's fucked because of it

except Destiny would not have been anywhere near as fucked if they'd kept releasing new games, because the engine could not support ever-increasing game size, so now there's several major releases gone into the ether because of the push for a singular live service
