I find that the observation of "Those that call something overtly political usually have an opinion they know is unpopular (or worse) about the subject matter" tends to be correct in cases like that.

I've had more than a few discussions with local mods of other groups around here about how certain phrases or arguments are signifiers and how much some of that crowd love 'hidden signs' that aren't very hidden.
Sadly they often are skeptical of it.
