Gay guy making his way in a not-so-gay world these days. Gamer, election junkie, Redditor. Cautiously more optimistic about AI than most people seem to be. Progressive, but not lefty. I follow anyone named Colin on principle.
But how were democrats winning in Montana, Louisiana, Iowa, North and South Dakota, and West Virginia? Until we get those kinds of candidates again, Democrats are going to have an uphill battle getting things through the Senate.

Lol I clocked that before I even read your second post. I don't know that it's intentional but I do think it's hilarious to think of Andrew Fucking Cuomo going around saying that all the time.

I've liked the term "second aunt/uncle" as parents to your second cousins, and "second niece/nephew" for the children of your first cousins. "once removed" is ambiguous and should be ditched.

Im always grateful when people post a quick fact clarification even if it is "pro-[person I dislike]". I want to dislike folks for the right reasons.

Time for a weekend roadtrip to a nearby city maybe?

But sacrifices at the altar do really bring a community together, so maybe the real friends were the dead babies along the way.

One of my ways of helping in my own cycles is externalization. When it comes to seasonal depression I've got it down - "why am I feeling sad?" *looks outside* "It's the sun's fault." While it doesn't make me feel happy, it shifts the blame outside myself and I feel distinctly less SAD.

Lol, my childhood character made it to level 49 and it took me like 3 years. I was NOT a gamer. I spent like all of my time doing a mining/smithing loop between the desert mine, Lumbridge, and Varrock. I was obsessed with making that loop.

It's a pun though, isn't it? It's an ad for the jeans?

Every time I see this debate there are tons of people who argue that the upfront cost is equal to the total cost, which makes me feel like they go shopping for one meal, one time, and then go back to ordering delivery and let everything they bought go bad in the fridge.

I went to an all boys high school, and I wonder if that might end up being the better route to go on a structural level. Boys and girls both deserve to succeed, and we have to do better at evaluating what actually works!
July 23, 2025 at 6:23 PM
Did this improve outcomes for the boys or did it just leave boys in a worse position? I worry that there's a perception that it's ok to just abandon boys because they're not willing to try - if education has such a gap, it's a structural issue, not one k-12 boys are responsible for fixing.
July 23, 2025 at 5:52 PM
I appreciate your efforts on this front, I don't know the solution myself, but I wish it was a bigger issue on both sides of the aisle.
July 23, 2025 at 5:45 PM
it's cultural (like this article's closing) and boys are to blame because they don't put the work in. But if we look at the gaps, this is definitely a structural issue and it should be approached like a structural problem. The onus isn't on k-12 boys to fix this issue!
July 23, 2025 at 5:44 PM
To your point, I feel like when it comes to this issue I see some of the strangest doublethink. Lots of people who would never tolerate this language toward young girls suddenly turn into gender essentialists and say it comes down to biology and boys just don't have what it takes. Or people will say

Just because I think the graph can be a little misleading without context - the racial identification graph there is asking people Puerto Rican, Mexican or Cuban ancestry were asked to identify their own race vs. observed skin colors. This is NOT how African Americans identified.
July 8, 2025 at 3:23 AM
No no no, you don't understand, if you mock the deaths of their children they will HAVE to join your side!
July 5, 2025 at 6:53 PM
Oh if we want to talk reality im all on board for massive reforms. I mean, we probably agree on 95% of our politics. I just don't think the systems you're envisioning here are remotely viable in reality.
July 4, 2025 at 9:22 AM
I wonder what your source is on that... because everything we've talked about has been completely hypothetical and pretty outlandish. Regardless, even if you build 1000000 front seats to the Taylor swift concert, someone must be closest to the stage. Someone is the first at a restaurant.
July 4, 2025 at 9:21 AM
Is it impossible to go to a concert but not want to be a singer? Or go to a restaurant but not love cooking or hosting? If anything, I'd think those who cannot are most likely to appreciate those who can!
July 4, 2025 at 9:19 AM
Concert pianists getting a bad rap here, sucks to see how you view artists. Maybe I was destined to be a concert pianist or a philosopher but had to work most of my life. Now it's too late, I'll never be great. Guess I need to be a waiter in this society if I want good housing.
July 4, 2025 at 9:17 AM
So qualifications are our currency now. You labor your way up the totem pole to earn the nice apartment in the good side of town. Except instead of value being anonymous currency, it's word of mouth and letters of reference. Sounds like central park might end up with the same class of people.
July 4, 2025 at 9:16 AM
I'm pointing out that the concept of NO SCARCITY does not exist in any real space. You keep saying we can just build more and make things bigger. But it presumes a lot of labor available and a lot of selfless humans. Humans are NOT selfless.
July 4, 2025 at 9:14 AM
I know plenty of wait staff who would rather do anything else, including game and go biking. So are you counting the attrition from people who just want to focus on their own self improvement? I think if I didn't have to work I'd practice piano and read more. Not do my job anyways.
