Quantum topology without topology
These lecture notes cover 13 sessions and are presented as an e-print, intended to evolve over time. Quantum invariants do more than distinguish topological objects; they build bridges between topo...

I think we should be more open about making fun of people who do this stuff.

Excited to share I’ve officially passed my prelim oral exam—now a PhD candidate! 🎉 Huge thanks to advisor Leonid Pryadko, mentors & friends for all their support.

Also, thrilled our paper got accepted for a poster at #QEC25 at Yale this August. Can’t wait to see everyone there!

Can I take a minute to appreciate how good Gottesman’s writing is.
40+ pages long and I am entertained. Some other folks give me a headache reading their abstract

Error Correction in Dynamical Codes
We ask what is the general framework for a quantum error correcting code that is defined by a sequence of measurements. Recently, there has been much interest in Floquet codes and space-time codes. In...

A misleading slide shown at QIP2025.

The surface code number is 10x too high (should be 0.1% not 1%; see fig 1c of arxiv.org/abs/2408.13687) and the tesseract number omits the worst 18% of shots (see table III of arxiv.org/abs/2409.04628).

Circuits Galore! Check out our latest work demonstrating three new circuits for implementing the surface code: arxiv.org/abs/2412.14360 They all perform well below threshold on a device optimised for the standard surface code, but they each open up wild new possibilities for devices.

A tell for theory-vs-practice in quantum magic states is mentioning γ.

In theory, γ dominates by determining how costs compound as stages are added. In practice we'll do MAYBE 1 stage of distillation past cultivation, enough to be more reliable than transistors, and then stop. Making γ irrelevant.
