It was once "never again," now it's "we are thankful for death and damage because we won."

Lest we forget that when one state wins, humanity loses.
Lest we forget the civilians.
Lest we forget the journalists.
Lest we forget the victims of genocide.
Lest we forget the victims of colonialism.

As I said before, the rhetoric is now "their deaths were necessary so the military could advance and defeat the enemy," but *who* is the enemy? Do we *need* more war or state violence in general? Why do we use a symbol of calm after the storm (a poppy) to glorify that very storm?

The first silences for Remembrance Day, beginning a year after World War I ended in 1918 as Armistice Day in 1919, were not out of gratitude, but because even war itself results in a staggering loss of life. Not only do soldiers die fron state violence, but civilians die too.

When I was still in school, each Remembrance Day assembly I would go to had the same theme—that war is necessary, and that each poor soul who died was completely worth it.

They died because of unnecessary conflict. We should not use their brutal deaths as glorification of war itself.
